Govt's Working Time Directive stance 'applauded'

The coalition government's efforts to restrict the effect of the Working Time Directive is to be applauded, a leading organisation has claimed.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) says that while the government may have only limited room to manoeuvre on this issue, its stance on the issue is welcome.

Stephanie Bird, director of the organisation, has claimed that the flexible labour market serves Britain well.

Those with sales jobs could be among those who benefit from the freedom to choose their own hours, which she said has served both employees and their companies well during the downturn.

Ms Bird added: "Maintenance of the UK's growing flexible working culture offers the prospect of a far-greater contribution to well-being and work-life balance than the kind of regulatory approach embodies in the Working Time Directive."

In other news, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation has confirmed that it will be contacting secretary of state for business Dr Vincent Cable about the rolling out of the Agency Workers Directive.
