More highly-skilled sales jobs needed for part-time working women

There are more women than ever working in part-time jobs, however it has been found that they are often having to downgrade when leaving full-time employment.

Vera Baird, solicitor general and lead minister for the equality bill, said that flexible working should "become the norm" and called for an end to the assumption that the 40/40/40 model - where we work 40 plus hours per week, for 40 weeks a year, for 40 years - is the top career choice.

"This is important for women, who still have the majority of caring responsibilities at home, but need and want to work. It is also good for men, who share in caring, and for businesses that will benefit more fully from a wider pool of talent," she added.

She also told sales recruitment hopefuls that more than half of all women in part-time employment are working below their potential, with a shortage of suitable opportunities being blamed.

Earlier this week, ten community projects in Lanarkshire aimed at getting women back into work received a funding boost from the UK Steel Enterprise.
