Sales recruitment: Rural businesses are proving recession proof

People looking for sales jobs in rural areas should have more opportunities open to them, according to one expert, who said out-of-town businesses are proving resilient in the current economic downturn.

Dr Paul Wilson, spokesperson for Rural Business Research at the University of Nottingham, said that the credit crunch has not had the same impact on rural businesses as it has on their city-based counterparts.

He said: "Rural businesses generally have been somewhat immune from the recession, simply because a lot of their output is focused on producing food."

Dr Wilson added that the only place where rural businesses will have been hit hard is in more niche markets where buyers may stay away during the downturn.

The Commission for Rural Communities recently organised a summit featuring business leaders who discussed the full impact of the recession on agricultural communities and ways of driving business investment right to the heart of rural England.
