Vocational qualifications 'increasingly valuable'

Vocational qualifications are becoming more valuable to young jobseekers in the difficult economic climate, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by independent education foundation Edge indicates more than 81 per cent of parents of 11-19 year olds now believe it is important for their child to have such a certificate.

Some 74 per cent of those surveyed said it will make their child more employable, while 40 per cent thought it would them get a job more quickly.

Chief executive Andy Powell commented: "It is so encouraging that more parents are finally recognising the strength of vocational qualifications' 'career currency' and the fact that there are many different paths to success, including apprenticeships."

He added that in the past they have often been seen as the 'poor cousin' of the education world.

Earlier this week, skills minister Lord Young stated that apprenticeships can make a major contribution to improving the UK's skills base.
