Sales employees set to receive right to train

Employees in sales jobs could soon have the right to request time off for training.

The Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills has launched a consultation on a new legal right for workers to request time to train.

Ministers estimate the new scheme will benefit around 300,000 people per year that have not been capable of doing so prior to the new legislation.

Skills secretary John Denham explained that this investment in skills training will ensure the economy remains internationally competitive.

He said: "We have still not persuaded every employer of the importance of skills.

"We need to find new ways to bring the drive for skills into every workplace and to every worker which is why we are consulting on a new right for workers to request time to train."

According to figures, one third of employers do not train their staff, while eight million employers receive no training whatsoever in any one year.
