Graduates aim for City jobs

Opting out of graduate sales recruitment could be a foolish move for firms, according to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS).

Going against the current wariness of financial markets, as many as one in eight graduates in 2008 have their hearts set on landing a banking job this summer, the UK Graduate Careers Survey 2008 has suggested.

Positions in City banks, such as sales jobs, are the second most popular graduate career option behind media.

Elspeth Farrar, communications director for AGCAS, notes that many firms are keen to continue recruiting to avoid recruitment risks later on.

She told ClickAJob: "Most organisations say that they are going ahead, they are honouring any offers and expecting to carry on with recruitment."

There are rich pickings for firms targeting sales recruitment in London, with Graduate Careers Survey revealing that 48 per cent of all finalists aspire to working in the capital.

This year's graduate candidates are also ambitious and figures suggest that they expect to be earning an average of £39,900 per annum after only five years in employment, where commission-based sales jobs are likely to rake in applications.
